Setting Up Claude for Excel

Installation takes under five minutes via Microsoft AppSource. Compatible with Excel 2019 or later, Excel for Mac, Excel on the Web, and Excel on Windows (Microsoft 365).

Confirm your Claude paid plan

Log into claude.ai and verify you are on a Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan. Unlike Claude for Word, individual Pro plans are fully supported — making this accessible to independent consultants and evaluators.

Install from AppSource or the direct link

Visit claude.com/claude-in-excel or search "Claude by Anthropic" in Microsoft AppSource. Click Get it now. Sign in with your Microsoft work, school, or personal Microsoft account.

Activate in Excel

Open Microsoft Excel. Go to Insert → Add-ins → My Add-ins. Locate Claude by Anthropic for Office and click Add. The Claude panel opens on the right side of your workbook.

Authenticate with your Claude account

In the Claude panel, click Sign in with your claude.ai credentials. Your plan is verified automatically. Enterprise users can also authenticate through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or Microsoft Foundry.

Open your MEAL database, indicator tracker, or survey data workbook. Press Ctrl+Option+C (Mac) or Ctrl+Alt+C (Windows) to open Claude instantly from anywhere in Excel.

How to Work with Claude Inside Excel

Claude for Excel works through a side panel that stays open alongside your workbook. There are five core interaction modes — each suited to different stages of M&E data work.

Ask About a Cell or Formula

Click any cell in your workbook — an indicator formula, COUNTIFS, VLOOKUP, or nested IF — and ask Claude: "Explain what this formula in D14 is calculating and whether it is correctly counting only female beneficiaries." Claude returns a plain-English explanation with cell-level citations so you can trace the logic.

Update Assumptions Across the Model

Select a range or refer to specific cells and ask: "Update the Year 2 target for indicator 3.1 from 1,200 to 1,500 and show me all cells affected by this change." Claude highlights every updated cell with an explanation, preserving all downstream formula dependencies.

Name Your Tabs Clearly

Before starting a Claude session, rename tabs from "Sheet1" to descriptive names like "Beneficiaries", "Indicators", "Budget". Claude references tab names in formulas — clear names prevent confusion in complex workbooks.

For formula explanations and error fixes, click the specific cell before typing your question. Claude reads the active cell and uses it as context — this gives far more precise answers than describing the formula in text.

Before asking Claude to make changes across the workbook, save a backup copy. For critical MEAL databases, maintain version-controlled file naming — "MEAL_DB_v3_2026-04-13" — before each Claude session.

Verify Totals Manually
